Home Schooling Social Concerns
![]() |
Social skills are usually a big area of concern for parents who are Home Schooling their children. For instance, taking a child from the social environment of a school, where many kids interact, to Home Schooling where a child is home most of the time with no other kids around but family can be very lonely, and if not addressed properly could lead to a social skills problems in the future.
Studies have shown that homeschool children usually don't have anything to worry about in terms of social skills. However, every child is different. Home school is a different environment than a normal school. Being at a normal school may be worse for a child in terms of social skills. In which case, Home Schooling is better for that child for his or her social skills development. Some children will thrive under the classroom environment, but there are children who thrive in a one-on-one tutorial environment. Which is better always depends on the particular child.
Social skills are learned in the home first. Parents have a lot to do with a child's social character and abilities, no matter what kind of school he or she attends. First a child will learn what his or her parents do around the house socially. The child will notice and learn all the body language from the parents. For example, the way parents talk, how they talk, whether they look people in the eyes when they talk, if they listen to people or talk over them, do they fiddle with their fingers or hair, do they fidget in front of people, do they twist their feet, do they shake their legs, bite their nails, etc... all of this body language evidence that parents probably take for granted will be absorbed and repeated by the child. For example, if the father twiddles his thumbs while he talks, the child will too. So, parents should watch out what they do in front of their child and be very particular about what the child learns from them. Once the child has learned a body language or social skills from his or her parents, it will take what seems to be a lifetime to correct. Many times it is not possible to correct these social habits and the child may regret and resent his or her parents for it later.
Home Schooling can make the child more confident
Many children and teenagers will admit that Home Schooling makes them more confident. They will be able to look at you in the eyes while talking to you, they will look interested and ask intelligent questions. This is in contrast with many children or teenagers whose parents have opted not to homeschool. Those kids sometimes lack confidence and cannot hold a conversation with interest or look at you in the eyes while you are talking to them. They may twiddle their thumbs and fidget while talking to you. These are all signs of lack of confidence. Home schooled children, on the other hand, have had much attention and encouragement from their parents and Homeschool Teachers. These children are effectively equipped with tools to go into the real world prepared. This comes from positive reinforcement by Homeschool Teachers and parents and not being ignored, embarrassed, and abandoned like they may feel at a school environment.
