Question: I need good homeschool material for an atheist.?
My grandparents homeschool me. All summer I begged and pleaded to go to school buy they said no. So I am about to buy my books online (they don't use a computer). They always make me get A beka and Bob Jones crap but I'm an atheist so I need to know what secular material I should get. Like what is the best brand to use.
I should add I need stuff at an ninth grade level.
funny, i've never seen the Homeschool Curriculum suggestion part of the bible.
wow '.' , would jesus approve of that answer?
Answer: Honestly, I never found a good secular science curriculum for home schoolers. I had better luck with finding kits & standard (the ones mainstream schools use-- amazon is your best bet there) textbooks. Then, I'd spend a bunch of time at the library. Teaching yourself sciences sucks (chemistry still baffles me), but at least it's better than "dinosaur fossils are a conspiracy by those Satanic Darwinists," which is what Bob Jones produces. Look for the Coloring books. The zoology one was wonderful. They're not perfect, but they're less baffling than, say, a random AP textbook. For math, I've never heard of anything better than Teaching Textbooks. You'll need a computer, & they're kind of expensive, but they're worth it. For English-type classes, I used standard textbooks & made a book list that fit with my grade (I looked at all my local schools' reading lists, since a local bookstore always has all the lists. I'm sure you can find lists online too). I also had qualified people critique my essays. There's a program that lets you do that, but I don't remember the name. I used a decent home-school program for Spanish, but they've just got Spanish-- & it was very Christian-based. I also think we only have it in Oklahoma. I think it's one of our local families. Sorry. If you want another language, (& you need at least 2 foreign language credits, preferably 4, for most colleges) you'll have to look around. Try to find something with an audio aspect. Really, I don't think English & languages have to be secular. Basically, finding secular home school materials sucks. We're not a very profitable market, I guess.
Edit
I totally forgot social studies. Again, secular, mainstream textbooks are the ONLY way to go. Christian social studies textbooks have the most biased views of history I have ever seen. It takes some serious blindness to call Jefferson a good Christian. Anyway, I tended to look at recommended AP textbooks for that-- I always tried to find textbooks with pre-made tests, either in a teacher's manual or online.
Also, for any tests you'll need for books, look online. There are tons of free tests out there.
