Question: Kindergarten Homeschool Schedule question....Please help. Thanks!?
I have a 5 year old that I'm planning on Homeschooling. I have several questions and would like advice and opinions of other homeschool mothers. First of all, what kind of schedule do you follow? In our state (Louisiana) we have to homeschool for 180 days a yr. Do you do Homeschooling every day of the week? How long should I teach my child a day? Some people say 30 mins per subject, others say that at this age, there is really no curriculum required and that only do about 30 mins all day long. What do you do? Also, since there is no "real" curriculum required, what do you teach? I know about Grade Level Expectations, do you follow that or not? Also, being new at Homeschooling, I was wondering what kind of schedule you used as far as keeping your housework done. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!!
I also have a 5 mth old too. So I will need time with her as well. So if you have any advice on how to schedule around a baby, that would be appreciated too.
Answer: It all depends on your states Homeschool Laws. In GA, we have to teach 180 days a year from Sep to Aug. We have to teach 4 1/2 hrs a day. BUT, since we don't have to report anything to the schools, some parents don't do this.
There is no way you can do homeschool every day of the week. Other things come in the way, such as shopping, doctor visits, etc.
When parents first start Homeschooling they think they have to do it the way public schools do it, but you don't.
I didn't start homeschool until my dd was 8, so I'm not sure what to tell you to do at age 5. I would say 15 min for each subject and a 5 min break in between each one.
Your state Homeschool Laws do not state a specific curiculum is required? If not, there are MANY things on the internet you can use that are so much fun!
Here's one site that has LOTS of things to learn for 5 yr olds -

About grade level expectations, in public schools these are called 'standards'. You can follow this if you like, but not all parents do UNLESS it is required by their state laws.
Here's a list of what you are suppose to teach for each grade that many homeschoolers go by -

You can also go to your state dept of education website, search for 'standards' and it will give you a list of what schools teach for each grade. There are a LOT of things on the list, and that's the reason why teachers fly through the material and don't care if the kids learn anything or not.
This was one of the reasons why I started homeschool. My child takes longer in learning things and the school didn't care. With homeschool you can take your time and make sure your child LEARNS.
I have no younger children so I can't help you there about your baby, sorry!

Question: What are some free onlne Homeschooling curriculums for k-12 grade?
Even though I homeschooled in 3rdgrade and 5th grade, I really didn't do any "curriculums", just basically workbooks. I have been Homeschooling myself for two weeks now, and going through GED and PreAlgebra books and Im in 10th grade. Well, since regular workbooks only go up t 8th grade, it's not that easy to do work..
SO! What are some good FREE Homeschooling ONLINE programs? My sister is in Kindergarten and also doing Homeschool. soo... FREE ONLINE Homeschooling Programs for K-12th.
Please and thank you! ![]()

Do a general search for free online schools because you did not mention what state you are in and there are probably hundreds more.
