Some states require a child to be taught by a certified tutor. However, certification to homeschool does not mean a college degree in education or teaching. Basically, you don't have to be a certified teacher to homeschool your children. In fact, many certified teachers admit that having a certification to homeschool does not help them in Home Schooling their children at all. After all, Home Schooling is different from what they teach you in a certified teaching class. Those classes prepare you more for a public school or private school setting, not Home Schooling.

The skills and techniques required for Home Schooling are very different from classroom teaching. Sometimes, having a degree in education or teaching may hinder your Home Schooling ability. You may have preconceived ideas of how to teach certain things whereas your child needs a different approach. There is no proof in statistics that a child studying under a certified teacher performs better than a child studying under an uncertified teacher. This is normal since you can be good at Home Schooling especially Home Schooling your child without having a degree in it.

There were also cases where children studying under parents with graduate degrees perform worse than children studying under parents with merely hig school diplomas. How well a child performs has more to do with how committed parents are to educate the child. The more positive attention parents give to their child, the more encouraged the child will be and hence the faster the child will learn. Parents who leave their children alone in front of a TV to go and have fun themselves will see slower progress in their child's Home Schooling. If you plan to let your child watch the TV as much as you'll spend on him or her personally each day, then do your child a favor and leave him or her in a private, or at least public school.
