Question: Making it up to our kids?
This Christmas my gf and I were unable to give our kids (10 y/o boy, 11 y/o girl) a Christmas due to being laid off. We both still feel really bad about that. We've been discussing giving them a 1 year break from school. (We both would've loved this when we were kids.) Officially we'll be "Homeschooling" them but we'll just let them do whatever while we go job hunting.
Is this enough to make up for ruining their Christmas? We're still planning on buying them makeup gifts when we find jobs.
Answer: It sounds like you're doing this to satisfy your own guilt not for what's best for your children. Leave the kids in school and spend more time with them. Time is a precious gift. When people look back to when they were young; their fondest memories were of time spent with their parents. Material gifts are only fleeting and shortly forgotten. I'm sure your kids would prefer to be around their friends and peers then stuck at home without much stimulation. Homeschooling is harder then it sounds and you would have to jump through several hoops with the school district to make that happen.
Homeschooled????
