Qualification to Homeschool
One question parents usually ask before they embark on home schooling their children is "am I qualified to homeschool my children?" The answer is YES. Parents automatically qualify for home schooling their children. The real question is not whether you qualify to homeschool your children, but whether you are able to homeschool your children well. First you should ask yourself the following questions:
-
How much do you want your child to succeed in life?
-
How much do you enjoy seeing your child grow physically and mentally?
-
Do you want the best for your child? Is that why you are home schooling your child?
-
Are you willing to sacrifice your personal life to educate your child and ensure that home schooling is successful?
-
Will you ensure that all the questions your child asks you gets answered accurately, even if it means you will have to admit that you did not know the answer and will have to look it up? This is a big problem among parents who are home schooling. A child is very inquisitive and will ask way-off-topic questions. Some parents will put the child down by either telling the child to stick to the topic or just answer without checking facts. Incorrect facts will remain in the child's head for a long time even if they have been corrected later.
If you answer these questions with passion and you are home schooling your children because you really think it is the best for your children, then you are capable. The last bullet point is very important and often overlooked. A child's brain absorbs a tremendous amount of information. Sometimes, parents answer the child's question thinking they know the answer. If that answer turns out to be incorrect, they will have done a very harmful thing to the child. It is normal for people to make a mistake, to forget a fact and think they know it. If you are at all unsure of the answer to your child's questions, tell your child that you will look it up with him or her. That way, you are encouraging your child to research facts and not assume that he or she knows it all. More importantly, by getting your child in the habit of looking up facts, you are teaching your child to find out for himself or herself facts that he or she might have heard. Your child will be smarter and more informed that way.
As parents, you know more about what your child needs than anyone else. That makes you most qualified to homeschool your child. This is especially true if you are frustrated with your child's current school and shool system. If that is the reason you are considering home schooling, then you are more qualified than the current school and teachers that your child currently has.
