Home School Curriculum

Each state has a set of required home school curriculum. You need to obtain the home school curriculum list from your state. There are seperate lists of home school curriculum for home schooling elementary, middle, and high school students. The list usually consists of:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Reading
  • Spelling
  • Social Studies

It might also contain:

  • Health and physical education,
  • Good citizenship

The home school curriculum you acquire from your state are the state required courses for home schooling. You can teach your child many more additional subjects but you cannot omit any of the required courses imposed by the state. Be sure to have a home school curriculum prepared before you pull your child out of his or her current school.

With the state's home school curriculum in hand, you need to review different curricular for your child's needs. This is where a home school support group will come in handy. (Click here to find out more about home school support groups.) Members of home school support groups have experimented with different curricula and will be happy to discuss any of these problems with you. This can be very helpful when you are trying to select the best home school curriculum for your child. You should also look at which textbooks are used with which home school curriculum. You know your child best, you can select the home school curriculum which your child will respond to the best. These home schooling textbooks can usually be viewed at any homeschooling conventions where curriculum providers will talk about their home school curriculum and display their home school curriculum textbooks for you to review. You may have to ask around for when these homeschool conventions are. Your home school support group is usually the best place to find them.

The home school curriculum you choose for one child may not be right for another. You will be best selecting the home school curriculum for each child. You may have to experiment on a few home school curriculum. Bear in mind that you don't need to use the same home school curriculum for all subjects. You can use one home school curriculum for mathematics and a different one for English, for example.

Packaged Home School Curriculum

There is also something called 'packaged home school curriculum'. This is a set of home school curricula pre-selected for you. In the package, you will find subjects and what you should be teaching on each subject. This is convenient if you found everything you need in the package. However, many parents who are home schooling their children find those packages in shortage of what they want to teach their children. In that case, they are better off purchasing each course separately. This is like buying a combo lunch or a set of a la carte. In a combo lunch, you cannot choose all that you want, although it is more cost effective. If you order an a la carte, you can have exactly what you want from what are available. However, it is a little more costly.
