Question: Homeschooling Spelling HELP for 2nd grader?

Hi, I need advice on what to do for my 2nd grader who has SO much trouble spelling. She was slow to learn to read (at end of 1st grade was beginning to read - after trying since Kindergarten) but now reads most books well (but I notice she tends to not sound out words/guesses at words as she is reading). She loves to read and we read to her pretty much daily. She is very intellegent.. I would bet her IQ is in the 140's- so that is not the problem. Her year-younger sister was reading very well after only a month or so of trying. I have noticed with my older daughter that she has some possible dyslexic issues- still forgets which way letters go, etc... Any ideas? She gets so embarrassed at church and our homeschool co-op when she is asked to write anything (friend's names, basic words, etc..) ... Today I asked her to spell "yes" and she couldn't remember which letter makes the 'y' sound! Should I put her in a program like Sylvan or Kumon and see if they can help me?

Answer: Try this program---www.SpellingTime.com.
It's free and you 'set up' a classroom. It is also set up where they can provide the spelling words each week or you can. Each day she goes on and does her spelling work and at the end of the week it gives her a spelling test and sends you the grade. It incorporates games to make learning fun and she also has to write out words (not just on the computer).
My daughter is entering 3rd grade but still reads at a 1st grade level (she can tell you the meaning of very complex words, but has difficulty with simple sentence structure)..it turns out she has a mild form of Autism.
The point is that everyone has problems with something (I stink at math but daughter excels, dad has language setbacks whereas I don't). Don't let her get overly frustrated and if she spells something wrong don't critize, try something like 'wow that sure does sound that way, can you think how else it might be spelled? or 'that's really good, those silent letters can be really sneaky'. Sometimes making a game out of something helps take the fear out of learning.
