Homeschool Summer Reading Program
![]() |

Question: Looking for homeschool resouces for teaching inpaired child reading?
My son is having trouble learning to read due to a hearing loss, he wears aids but can hear some without them but does not hear high frequency words which most phonic programs are based on. He is verbal and attends speech and an hearing inpaired class
he can sign but does so only when he can realted what he is saying. He is dealyed in all studies but reading is his biggie. I would like to know of any resources that i can use this summer to help bring him closer to his real grade level. Thanks
Answer: You can get a program like Distar or SRA corrective reading and try that. He will probably need you to go slowly with him and make sure he has all the steps. Also, you can try sightword programs like Edmark Reading levels 1 and 2.
I would encourage you to contact your state's department of education and ask to speak with someone who works with hearing impaired students. There might be a School for the Deaf in your state as well, and they might be able to give you some good ideas. Or contact a university which offers teacher preperation programs in the area of deaf education. Not only would they be able to point you to some good curriculum materials, they might also know about summer programs.
