Question: Route 66 Homeschool project ideas?

Old 66 is just about a block from our front door. When the kids realized that's the road from Cars, they were beside themselves. It is all shut down now, but I'd like to take them for a walk on it this summer. When we get their I would like to do some kinda fun project to teach them more about the history of Old 66. Is there a good short book we could read out there too? The kids are 9 and 2 so it would need to be a kid book. Also would it be appropriate for them to take a piece of it? A pocket sized piece.

Here are a couple of interesting links related to the old “Mother Road”. I live in Missouri-however not much of it left here. Although one can still find interesting parts along I-44
