Question: Homeschooling for 6th grader?

I am considering Homeschooling one of our children when she enters 6th grade in a few years. What advice do you have as far as curriculum, making sure she stays on track with the state expectations, as well as joining or not joining homeschool groups? She does extremely well in school and is in all advanced/gifted classes. She will be going back into the public school system for grades 9-12. Thanks!

Answer: Not only should you be checking out the legal requirements of Homeschooling for your state at hslda.org, you also need to check out the requirements for placing her back in to the public school when the time comes (realizing of course that things can change). From your name, I am assuming you are in Florida?
Every state is different, so go to your state education agency website and find "admissions policies for homeschool students" and find out what they require so you are prepared for high school.
In my state (Texas) the state leaves it up to each district to set their admissions policy for homeschool student, so here you have to check at the district level.
You just want to make sure you have the right records. Some places will accept a parent generated transcript. Other places do not, they will only accept an "official" transcript from an accredited and accepted institution, and in my particular district that is only a few places.
So, you can see the importance of making sure you know exactly what is needed to enroll your daughter in to a public highschool in your area now instead of later.
If you are in a situation where your transcript is not accepted by the district, then your child would have to take CBE exams for admissions. If you are facing a situation where your child will have to be tested before enrolling in the highschool, just make sure you know what the exams will cover so you can prepare.
Homeschool groups are a definite yes! These groups are a great source of information, encouragement, activities and friendship.
