Answer: Florida requires that each homeschooled student (those who are Homeschooling by sending in a "letter of intent" to the county) have an annual evaluation. The annual evaluation doesn't necessarily have to be a test, though it can be. The choice is your parents'.

The state gives several options:
--take the FCAT through the local schools--this option is free but has to be done at the same time that the schools are doing the tests, usually in February or March--contact the school in January to arrange it

--take some other standardized test with a someone who has teacher certification from the State of Florida in some academic subject for any grade between K and 12 supervising the test--there are groups out there that sell the tests to individual homeschoolers; you'd just need to locate a local teacher who'll administer the test for you

--have a state certified teacher do a "portfolio evaluation"--this means that a teacher will look over the work you've done in the past year. The teacher is supposed to be looking for "academic progress commensurate with ability", so as long as you're making reasonable progress, it isn't difficult to "pass" such an evaluation.

--There are other options, too, including having a licensed psychologist do an evaluation. Or you can arrange something else with your local school district--those who've used correspondence schools or online schools that provide progress reports will often ask their school district if they can just send in a copy of grade reports for the evaluation and most districts will readily agree to this.

You don't need a licensed teacher to teach you. Your parents can do a great job. But for the annual evaluation, most people use a certified teacher. It shouldn't be something that you need to study for. If you know other homeschoolers in your area, ask them to tell you whom they've used for evaluations. Or try joining a Homeschooling list for your area and asking on there. Or try this list
