Question: Question about Homeschooling?

I was wondering if its possible to stop public school and go into Homeschooling program during the middle of the year? Or do i have to wait until the year ends?

I'm a freshman at high school by the way. Me and my mom had a discussion about it and we wanted to know this. We've checked all our state requirements and everything as well.

Thanks for the knowledge.

Answer: Boy, this gets asked quite a bit on this board.

If you're planning on Homeschooling independently, then yes, you can leave school whenever you like.

If you're planning on using public-school-at-home, like one of those "Virtual Academies," then they probably have hoops you'll need to jump through. Remember, those things are set up and owned by the district, and they still get to tell you what to learn and how fast to learn it.

Your other options are to sign up with VA as an independent....or to buy a boxed curriculum off the shelf...or to create your own curriculum....or to read up on "unschooling" and learn by DOING rather than schoolishly studying. What does THAT mean? Try reading The Teenage Liberation Handbook for more on that theory...you can also Google "unschooling" and the writings of John Holt.

There's a lot to be said for each of these methods, depending on the kid involved and their personalities and interests.
