Question: Homeschool / Unschool Questions?

First of all, I'm in high school and please note that unschool is a type of homeschool.

1. Is it legal to unschool in CA? Will my parents get in trouble?
2. Is it that your parent just withdraw you from school and say that they want to homeschool you (even though it is really unschool since my parents have to work) then you can stay home and start learning by yourself?
3. Do your parent have to fill out any paper work like those who actually teach their children? You know... every October.
4. Are there any requirement for unschoolers?
5. What else do I need to know about unschooling?
6. Are you a homeschool unschooler? If so, how do you feel about it?

Thank you.

Answer: 1. Is it legal to unschool in CA? Will my parents get in trouble?

Yes, it's legal. They won't get in trouble if they are complying with the law. They should file a Private School Afadavit, which you can learn about here: http://www.homefires.com/ca_style.asp

2. Is it that your parent just withdraw you from school and say that they want to homeschool you (even though it is really unschool since my parents have to work) then you can stay home and start learning by yourself?

Your parents have to either enroll you in a Homeschooling program be it public or private or umbrella, or file file a Private School Afavavite and then just send a letter of withdrawal to your current school, just the same as if you were changing to another brick and mortar school.
However, unschooling is not a form of Homeschooling where your parents don't teach you. It's interest learning, regardless of whether your parents are home: http://www.holtgws.com/whatisunschoolin.html

3. Do your parent have to fill out any paper work like those who actually teach their children? You know... every October.
Just the Private School Afadavite. They also need to keep a file with the names and "titles" of everyone who teaches you. No one ever asks to see the file, they can be as brief as they'd like.

4. Are there any requirement for unschoolers?
Legally, the requirements are the same as for all homeschoolers.

5. What else do I need to know about unschooling?
Read The Teenage Liberation Handbook!

6. Are you a homeschool unschooler? If so, how do you feel about it?

It works for us. It takes a lot of courage, at the start, to trust yourself or your child that they have the wisdom to lead the way. After that, it's very natural. I support all forms of education, as long as it works for the individual child.
