Question: What online curriculum do you use?

Does anyone know of a good online Homeschool Curriculum for my 13 year old for under $500 a year in australia

Answer: Your online homeschool options are numerous, but few of them are under $500 if you are looking for more than a course or two.

Why not try to organize on online co-op. The tools already exist and there is even a site already working at the ground floor to get one off the ground. Basically, each family takes a share of the teaching load and therefore the costs of paying a teacher is not there. Then instead of teaching every course at your child's grade level, you merely specialize in one or two and teach your own child and a few of the other teaching parent's kids. In turn, your student gets to be in their classes for a few courses. The costs involved are merely the the ones just for the online, live classrooms we use from Elluminate. Once the costs are spread among the families for that it is still less than $500/year. When all that is needed is the free 3-seater online classroom there isn't even that cost. One nice thing about the live, online classroom envirnoment is that there is a real teacher present and there is the companionship of other students, even if it is online.

If you want to explore the idea, I am one of the volunteer developers at Virtual Homeschool Group. I can tour you through the online classroom tools, explain how we set up our shared Moodle courses, and guide you on how you might get an Eastern Hemisphere timezone set of classes started using our free Moodle site. It is all ground floor level stuff as we get this idea off the ground, but I think it is a wonderful idea to have a homeschool, virtual co-op. I hope to see it thrive and grow.
